The Tax Payers Pay A Lot For Our Traveling
I came across an article discussing about how Malaysians spend a lot of time traveling to and from work. If a person uses 2 hours each day to travel to and from work, then one week he will spend 10 hours traveling. In one year he’d spend 520 hours or slightly less than 22 full days (24 hours) or 66 working days (8 hours) just to travel to and from work. These hours, if converted to monthly wages, will be equivalent to about 2 months pay.
But another thought struck my mind too. Why do spend so much time traveling? Is it because of the inefficiency of the public transport systems, traffic jams, or simply because of the lengthy distance? In my case, sometimes my time spent on the road is twice the norm when there’s traffic jam.
Not only are we wasting our precious time behind the wheels stuck in a traffic jam, we are also burning petrol. And the Government subsidises petrol. Now multiply this by the tens of thousands of cars, or maybe even hundreds of thousands of cars burning petrol in traffic jams, twice a day, every single working day. Can you imagine how much Government subsidy is wasted? And the wasted money come from the tax payers. It comes from my wallet!
If the Government would just be serious and committed in improving the public transportation systems, then it could save a lot of petrol subsidy as more people will choose to leave their cars behind and opt for public transport.
